CANISTER-SHOT: A canister-shot is a metallic cylinder about one caliber in length, filled with balls and closed at both ends with wooden or metal disks. They are supplied for all guns. For 8-inch canister, and all those of less caliber, the envelope is made of tin, while canister for the larger calibers have an envelope of iron. The bottom of 15-inch canister is made of two thicknesses of 1-inch hard wood, crossing each other, and put together with wrought-iron nails clinched. A spindle, with a wrought-iron handle passing through the center of the canister, is riveted on the bottom through a square plate. All other canister have bottom-heads of one thickness of hard wood. Top-heads are all made of white pine. The case is notched, turned over the heads, and tacked down. The balls for all canister are 1.3 inch diameter, and the number used varies with the caliber. To give more solidity to the mass, and prevent the balls from crowding upon each other when the piece is fired, the interstices are closely packed with sawdust.

Ladies & Gentlemen! May I bring to your attention a new story dedicated to the ACW.

The Little Ranger.

We were returning home after a successful raid upon the enemy. We were struggling on our land and our cause was right. We won two dozen best horses and were on the way to our positions. Yankees didn't expect such audacity.

Something reminiscent of a human was lying at the road border. I dismounted my steed and bend over the strange sack. It wasn't a sack. A girl dressed in dirty and torn garments lied her face down on the cold ground. I touched her shoulder and her little body shuddered in cold shivering.

-She is alive!

Rapidly I took a quilt from the saddle and wrapped up the unfortunate wretch.

-Guys! My estate is a dozen miles way, we cannot leave her here!

The girl was unconscious and I wasn’t sure she survives the furious galloping.

-She is exhausted badly and only God can help her. – said the doctor. – Be happy the hospital is located in your house. I shall do all the best, but… - the doctor made a helpless gesture.

The next day I found the Sly Possum - an old Indian at her bedside. It wasn’t anything clear from his language, but I believed in the sorcery of Indians.

Two days we spent in a new raid and imagine how eagerly I wished to return back in my estate! I couldn’t recognize the foundling. The old Indian’s sorcery worked miracles. The girl opened eyes. The Sly Possum hold a cup with buffalo milk.

-Good, bueno, - he told bringing a cup to girl’s lips.

The next morning the doctor called me:

-She became conscious! But we cannot understand what she says. Strange language… It looks like French. May be she went off her heat. Nobody knows what she had suffered.

In a moment I was by her.

-Bonjour! – her voice was feeble and she closed her big grey eyes again.

It seemed to me she smiled. But it was the grimace of pain and suffering.

-Merci… - she whispered drifting off again.

The next week was spent in raids. Yankees were drawing up forces. All that time I thought about my little French girl. Just having dismounted I threw myself in her room. The picture made me mute. Dressed in soldier underwear the little one was stroking a pose one can see only in the circus. It was so-called a bridge gymnastic position.

-Incomparable… - I whispered.

The girl returned herself in position “attention”.

-Voilà! – a sweat was on her face, but her eyes smiled. Mais je suis encore faible…- her face became pallid and I picked a weightless body just in time to prevent her from falling on the floor.

-Doctor!! – I was startled at my yell.

-I cannot prohibit her doing such exercises. Until we know her history and mystery we cannot restrain her from doing anything. Probably she is mad…

All the evening I was listening to her story. Her name was Jacqueline and she descended from a French family noble mais déclassée. Her parents went to America in search of a better life but the family was shipwrecked. She was saved and a travelling French circus adopted her. As all circus actors were Frenchmen she didn’t knew English. The circus traveled through the combat zone. Once all the actors scattered saving their lives. She didn’t remember the rest

Jacqueline has got well soon. The first she asked when she get outside in the fresh air was HORSE. Being one of the best riders I was astonished by her skill. A sabre was her next will. There was fencing equipment at my house. Shame on me, but she was so trained that even veterans told: she is not a girl, she is a solder! Imagine what we felt when she discharged all six chambers in a bull's eye!

-Prenez-moi à votre service! Je vous porterai bonheur!

I ordered her a uniform. “Little Ranger” was her new name. I choose the best horse for her and she became our companion-in-arms in endless raids. A former circus acrobat, she was as if created for our service. Being small and feather-light she let the horse develop a speed no one living being had ever run!

No complaint was ever heard from her; never was she tired in spite of everything. Once Little Ranger was surrounded by Yankees and we noticed it too late.

-Guys! Little Ranger is caught!

We tried to charge but canisters and Gatling-gun-fire cut off our path of her. We dismounted in order to save horses and helplessly contemplated the awful scene of our infamy. But the miracle occurred the next time. Jacqueline directed her horse directly between guns and Yankee horsemen. Yankee had to cease fire. In a moment she was in our disposition. Yankees open furious fire. We were hailed down a storm of canisters, cannon-balls and bullets. In a hundred yards Jacqueline spread her arms wide and fell on the horseback.

-That’s all… She is dead…

But it was a trick. Having made her horse lay down she smiled:

She didn’t have a scratch on her. But two barrels of her Colt revolvers were empty.

She smiled:

We made a fighting retreat. The entire world supported Yankees. Our step back was made in the vicinity of my country estate. I found it devastated and burnt down. The Sly Possum headed an armed resistance and was killed by Yankees. His disfigured corps was hung on the old oak tree.

- Ils me le paieront! - gritted the teeth the Little Ranger choking back her tears. It’s for the first time I saw her crying.

So were we retreating. Without support, without home, without motherland… Our detachment was dismissed. The highway robbery and pillage became our lot. We ride too hard escaping pursuit. Jacqueline never tired in spite of aimless and restless races. She put on civilian men's clothes and looked like a little vagrant.

Once a miracle saved us. Being pursued by a group of mounted Federals we were on the brink of ruin. We shot back but forces were unequal. Jacqueline’s horse was killed.

-Sauve-toi! Je te couvrirai! – She cried and prepared to return the fire being covered by the killed horse.

-Imbécile! – I caught Jacqueline by collar and threw her weightless body across the saddle.

A group of rebels met us! Suddenly appeared they from the road turn! To repay for our salvation Jacqueline proposed a plan of the town capture. The old captain listened to my translated report and indulgently smiled.

-We are not rangers… My men are exhausted. The only thing is important now – to steal the documents of their colonel. The scoundrel ordered to kill our wounded. Federals finished off with bayonets the whole hospital…

Jacqueline said she was capable to fulfil the plan. She asked a lady’s clothes and a light carriage. We found all needed in a small domain not far away. The domain was abandoned and was peopled by a single Negro nurse who delivered us some of her lord’s wardrobe.

We couldn’t recognize our Little Ranger. A beauty stood on the terrace steps. The delicate cast of features, imperial bearing and aristocratism were charming.-

-Je suis une actrice toutefois! – She smiled.

Only that moment I felt her beauty. The life indulged my amours but it was the first time I discovered myself amorous. Jacqueline caught my eye:

- She fought back her tears telling me her trouble.

Jacqueline was given a letter to my distant relative in the town. The old captain saluted with his sabre and the regiment presented arms when Little Ranger’s carriage parted.

-God save her!

Jacqueline returned the next morning. She was in vagabond’s rags, her eyes shone with joy.

-Votre ordre est exécuté! Voici les papiers, voici les cartes! – a pile of papers was thrown on the table. A handful of silver dollars were immediately tossed there.

-What does it mean?

-Ce sont les honoraires d'amour! J’ai joué mon rôle!

Jacqueline’s story was terrible. She found the colonel in the theatre, she was taken in his home, and finally the colonel was KILLED! At the same time she made the acquaintance of an actor who had a plan of kidnapping the Federal President! Cards were daguerreotypes of colonel’s girlfriends; papers appeared to be les billettes doux

-God damn! A modern Charlotte Corday… That's all we need!

Jacqueline told us the details of her action.

The next day we entered the town and occupied it without a single shot. Jacqueline’s memory kept all posts and picquets which were immediately charted. The Little Ranger was in the most dangerous place during our mad raid. We were acting in silence – only cold steel. A clank of blades reached my ear. Three Yankee officers have driven Jacqueline in the corner of the fence. Armed with terrible “old wrist-breakers”, they tried to surround the girl.

-Take it alive!

A light hussar sabre in left and a dagger in right girl’s hand made a dead defense.

-A left handed bitch!

Jacqueline fulfilled the order: “with cold steel!” Two federals felt stricken down with my blade.

-Lasse-moi ! – squealed Jacqueline pointing the blade at the third officer. I obey her order.

Never have I seen the action more graceful and perfect. Jacqueline performed an infernal dance. She dodged blows, parried and finally her lunge was mortal. The officer fall, his face cut.

-Petite folle! J'inquiète de toi… - I embraced her shoulders and felt her nervous tremor. Jacqueline’s little heart was beating like mad.

We took a large number of Union horses and munition. I organized a gang on horseback. The famous actor just known to Jacqueline now was among us. The plan is simple. We kidnap the Federal President from the White House and exchange him for the recognition of the Confederate government.

An amount of money is needed. Tomorrow we stick-up a Union express car! In the evening I had a conversation with Jacqueline.

Jacqueline started and drew back:

Jacqueline began to sob.

Jacqueline buried her face in her hands. Like an absolute idiot I was scrutinizing her iron fingers.

Une déclaration… all in vain… Women always gave me all I needed… I cannot explain you, my poor silly thing, what I want. I cannot explain myself what I want now. She is unattractive; she doesn’t even can speak English… I cannot represent her in the High Society… But why I cannot stop keeping my mind on her?

Tomorrow we stick-up the Union express car! The president will be kidnapped!

We stuck-up the express car. We did it together with Jacqueline. It was her idea to blow up the railroad. She set fire to the fuze. How could I underestimate her skill?

-Mon meilleur truc est encore à l'avenir! – She smiled, rushing to the attack.

It was a terrible massacre among the crashed wagons. Jacqueline emptied almost all chambers in her revolvers. For the first time have I seen the two-pistol shooting. The deal was almost done when my Colt’s last chamber misfired. Jacqueline spring up as if out of the ground between me and the Yankee that has just triggered his Colt. I dropped my revolver. Jacqueline inserted her Le Mat, like a second, barrel up, in my hand and pointed her one at the Yankee.

-Dessus - derrière!

These were her last words. Two guns fired at the same time. The Blue officer fell down. By-turn the terrible blow threw back Jacqueline’s little body. Falling back, she covered me for the second time. A bullet shot from behind blew off my hat. I shot in response with Jacqueline’s Le Mat over my shoulder. The Yankee on the wagon roof was the last. Jacqueline’s Le Mat drum was empty and she switched the cocked hammer to the “grapeshot” position.

Jacqueline’s heart was no long beating. Her death was instant. A .44 bullet tore her chest.

I buried The Little Ranger in the prairie. The grave was dug with Jacqueline’s dagger. I threw the earth with my hat. It's my guilty that the innocent young girl whose predestination was to amuse and cheer folks died…

...

The president was not kidnapped. He was killed by the Actor. Sic semper tyrannis! We gained nothing. While escaping the Actor broke his leg. He took sanctuary in my friend’s home. His appearance is an image of me, so I am playing his role now.

My head prices at $100,000 now…

The life under the tyrant's yoke means Shame! The new president will be killed! There is no more Jacqueline near me. Je ferai cela moi-même.

Addendum.

I was at the Garrett farm April 26, 1865. I was among these who shot the Actor’s. I saw his corps. I found this notebook in his waist-pocket. Other documents were handed at the headquarters. Instead of the awaited award we were reprimanded.

Addendum.
